Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki was our favourite camping spot from our first time in NZ and a picture of our camper parked on the shore is the cover photo from our last trips photo book.

But first on the way we stopped at the clay cliffs. If I had known how bumpy and dusty the gravel road to the cliffs was and how much everyone would complain I probably woulda skipped this stop, but we did it and went for a quick hike and it was quite an impressive area.

After sliding around in the dust we drove another 30 minutes to the prettiest free camping site in all of NZ.

Our first time here we parked just off the shore and there were only 2 other groups, one of which were Canadians tenting in a Tarn 3. Classic MEC.

In the intervening years the shore had been roped off and the spot has become much much more popular! Thankfully at least this increased use has come with a flush toilet.

Even with more neighbours it was still dream camping. Gorgeous sunshine, light breeze, good swimming… we did some reading and some rock hopping and lots of walks to explore and chase rabbits.

Mt Cook in the background of almost every shot. I can’t help it!

Mikaya found this crazy rock that we determined with Aunt Tammy (our geologist in the pocket) must have been made up of clumped seashells in a conglomerate. When the shells dissolved before the substrate it resulted in this bizarre semicircular pattern.

Bye Lake Pukaki we will be back soon!
